Abstract

English abstract:
The hippodrome of Tor di Valle (1959), by Spanish architect Julio Lafuente, is a challenge both in design and development, making it a model reference of the architecture of its time. The solution of its thin concrete shell and the spatial structure of the stands suggest a sign of modernity
and constructive rationality, and the enormous dimensions of the pieces as a whole give the stands an extraordinary expressive power. Despite all of this, the building is currently in danger of being demolished. Therefore, the objective of this article is to make public a piece of work that, in spite of its beauty, has gone unnoticed in the last few decades, and to contribute to preventing its disappearance.
Spanish abstract:
El hipódromo de Tor di Valle (1959), del arquitecto español Julio Lafuente, constituye un reto de diseño y realización que lo convierte en un referente ejemplar de la arquitectura de su época. La solución de membrana laminar de la cubierta y la estructura espacial del graderío suponen un signo de modernidad y racionalidad constructiva, y las enormes dimensiones del conjunto proporcionan a las tribunas una potencia expresiva extraordinaria. A pesar de ello, el edificio se encuentra hoy en peligro de demolición. El objetivo de este artículo es, por tanto, dar a conocer una obra que, a pesar de su belleza, ha pasado inadvertida durante las últimas décadas, y contribuir con ello a tratar de evitar su desaparición.
