Abstract
This project explores the perspectives of representatives from key UK higher education actors on UK’s membership in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) post 2020. The European Higher Education Area (EHEA) is an international initiative for the harmonisation of higher education (HE) systems in 49 signatory countries. 2020 marks a new era in the EHEA in at least three ways: first, it is the deadline for the achievement of a fully-functioning EHEA, and the plan to continue the international cooperation in the EHEA and beyond until 2030 was announced in the EHEA ministerial meeting on the 19th of November 2020; second, the COVID-19 crisis of 2020 has altered the work of the EHEA as even the final project meeting had to take place online unlike any preceding meetings (EHEA, 2020); third, the UK which is one of EHEA’s founding states is finishing its transitional period for leaving the EU in December, and UK’s polarised views about the EU, evidenced in the Brexit referendum, may indicate a change in its attitude towards ‘the European’ in the European Higher Education Area as well. Participants were asked a series of open ended questions during a 60 minute interview. This dataset contains: six anonymised interview transcripts; blank consent form, participant information sheet and interview guide; and an anonymised list of interviewees.
