Description: | Middle Street Resource Centre in Beeston, Nottingham, supports people who are socially excluded from mainstream society due to mental ill through recreational and skills-based activities. MSRC is the only day centre in Nottingham which caters for the rehabilitation needs of people with long-term mental health problems. The mixed-media exhibition, funded by a National Lottery Heritage Fund project awarded to Nottingnam Trent University, aims to promote inclusivity by removing barriers to participation for people with mental ill health, who are under-represented in heritage. The exhibition has been produced collaboratively with the Centre’s past and present service users and staff, volunteers, peer support groups and local residents; it documents and celebrates the Centre’s rich hidden heritage, including the important role the Centre has been playing in supporting the wellbeing of the local community for over 50 years. Co-produced oral histories and inclusive art-based methods, such as poetry and crafts on display explore the personal and collective memories of the people who have run and supported the Centre and of those who have benefited from its existence. The aim of the exhibition is to promote greater awareness of the needs of people who experience mental distress and, in doing so, to reduce stigma amongst wider communities who will engage with this heritage. |
