Abstract: Mosul has been a society of pluralistic heritage and shared identity with a pride in diverse cultural heritage of a multi-ethnic, multi-religion society. Old Mosul’s heritage was a victim of the violence erupted during the armed conflict with ISIS (2013-2017) that resulted in mass destruction of its historic fabric and heritage. The traditional art, crafts, and festivals, upon which local livelihoods depend, largely disappeared. Six years after the war, Old Mosul is recovering and rising again.

This exhibition is designed based on three years of extensive documentation of endangered tangible and intangible heritage in Old Mosul. It is curated to celebrate the incredible story of Mosul’s resilience and rise. Designed around Four principal legacies of war and peace in Mosul’s urban heritage, this exhibition aims to showcase local people’s journey towards full recovery and their proud story of rise from the wreckage of destruction.
