This paper will set out an argument that women are undervalued within the Design Industry, and thus are let down by a Higher Education system that maintains and actively promotes the patriarchal structure of Design. It considers the wider implications of Gender in Design, before focusing on the role the Design Industry plays in Higher Education, and thus the women educated within that system. From there it will explore the role Higher Education has to play in women’s success through its inherent privilege and neoliberal approaches. The essay will then discuss the ability of women to succeed within the current UK education system, and how this translates to career success. Finally, it will focus on a specific example of how policy effects educational direction and the impact this has not only on women, but all those looking for a future in design.
