Abstract

An investigation into the use of the foam flotation process for wastewater treatment is described, the main aim being to formulate a suitable method for the design and process optimisation of flotation units.

Preliminary trials were carried out on the purification of water abstracted from the River Trent, using a pilot plant loaned by the collaborating establishment. These trials established the major parameters of the foam flotation process to be influent feed rate, air flowrate, plant, dimensions, surfactant concentration and foam removal method. A more detailed investigation into the effects of these parameters was carried out in two laboratory flotation units using a suspension of china clay in tapwater to represent the wastewater feed. In the final stages of the experimental programme laboratory flotation tests were carried out on a synthetic river water made from reconstituting river sediments with tapwater.

The results of the trials carried out showed foam flotation to be a viable method of wastewater treatment. Clarification by flotation was a rapid process and flotation units could be operated efficiently at low surfactant dose rates. In an optimised system floated particles could be collected as a sludge of high dry solids content.

A method for the rational design and operation of flotation units was formulated by adapting the established theories of mineral flotation kinetics. Generally a high degree of correlation was found between the theoretical relationships produced by this analysis and the results of the experimental programme.
