Abstract

This book offers a range of theoretical and conceptual ideas as well as practical examples providing detailed insight into holistic opportunities for promoting desistance, reducing reoffending, and supporting (re)settlement and (re)integration. It offers the rethinking of ideas through fresh lens’ to ascertain the most benefit for all parties and the utilisation of social capital where it may present. It thereby encourages new perspectives and framing of what is understood across the desistance and (re)settlement literature within a holistic lens. Central to this is seeing the person before the offence whilst also recognising the drive to ensure we have fewer future victims. Continuing on the current trajectory, the situation across the criminal justice system is only set to become more complex and unsustainable, thereby posing a direct risk to potential future victims. This requires innovative thinking in terms of desistance facilitation, sometimes within the confines of what is already available to work with. A richness of ideas as to what such holistic approaches may look like is offered across all of the chapters within this book. Readers will be encouraged to consider what can work within provisions we currently have, potential ethical considerations surrounding these, as well as how the systems currently worked with can be maximised for greater potential impact.
