Abstract

Our online event will showcase two case studies of innovation in heritage spaces from Nottingham Trent and Swansea universities.

The first case study will highlight an ongoing collaborative research and knowledge exchange between Nottingham Trent University and the National Justice Museum. We’ll showcase VR and 360° video demonstrators developed in consultation with museum and caves stakeholders; to explore how immersive technologies can improve accessibility and visitor engagement. We’ll share key outcomes from this work, including practical guidance for implementing immersive technologies in heritage settings and the use of 360° video to provide access for those unable to physically enter the caves. The session will also include an update on a pilot currently being trialled at the City of Caves visitor attraction, discussing its impact on visitor experience, challenges encountered, and next steps.

The second case study will focus on M[AR]GAM, a collaborative digital heritage project that explored how augmented reality (AR) can be used to reanimate historic interiors and enhance public engagement with cultural heritage. Developed by Swansea University in partnership with NPT Council, CFP and other stakeholders, the project uses immersive AR technology to digitally reconstruct the interiors of two rooms within Margam Castle, allowing visitors to experience the art and elements of the building’s past through their mobile devices. We will discuss how AR can support both on-site and remote engagement, enabling visitors to explore heritage environments in new ways while providing opportunities for interpretation, education, and cultural storytelling.
