Abstract

Although theory clearly suggests that corporate social responsibility (CSR) is shaped by national, industry-level, and firm-level factors and reflects a firm's capacity to manage different stakeholder groups, little is known about the relative influence of the determinants of CSR across multiple levels of analysis and stakeholder groups. Using a sample of 2,060 large public companies from 21 countries spanning 5 years, we investigate the relative importance of the impact of firm, industry, country, and national business system (NBS) factors on CSR exhibited toward six stakeholder groups: customers, local communities, shareholders, suppliers, the natural environment, and employees. To examine these multilevel determinants across multiple stakeholders, we apply analysis of variance (ANOVA), variance components analysis (VCA), and hierarchical linear modeling (HLM). Our findings show that firm-level antecedents are especially important for CSR overall as well as for CSR targeted at local communities, the natural environment, and employees, whereas broader institutional influences (country and NBS levels) are more important for shareholder-oriented CSR. Our results also indicate a focus on the stakeholder-specific aspects of CSR may be theoretically beneficial.
