Description: Cloud of Unknowing, Charterhouse, London Solo show of 'Cloud of Unknowing' shown in The Norfolk Cloister. Charterhouse was once a Carthusian Priory with direct connections to Beauvale Priory where these pictures were made. The title of this work is taken from a text thought to have been written at Beauvale in the 14th century by an unidentified medieval mystic. The book proposes that to approach the infallible one has to surrender oneself entirely, correlating with the creative process of making art and our relationship with nature. The Priory was fed by a natural spring in these woods called Robin Hood’s Well which features in the works of D.H Lawrence. Up until the 1960s there was a clearing next to the spring that was used each Midsummer’s Eve for dancing. These commonplace woods continue to provide healing, solace, and revelation today.
