Abstract

Re-turning is the most recent investigation in an ongoing artistic research project by Andrew Brown, Joanne Lee, Danica Maier and Christine Stevens. (Co-authored, and edited).
Working under the title Returns, the group grew out of a 2012 residency at the former Spode ceramics factory organized by Topographies of the Obsolete, an international artistic-research project. Since then, Returns has repeatedly returned to investigate Stoke-on-Trent, its urban landscapes and diverse communities, its manufacturing and craft skills, and the material history that has made it so distinctive. This book, and the exhibition at AirSpace Gallery to which it relates, present aspects of this research and the ‘back stitch’ methodology through which it has been pursued.
