Abstract

The 2019 inspection report into Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) highlighted evaluation and the use of data as a particular issue in both NFRS and in fire and rescue services (FRS) generally (HMICFRS 2019). In their second inspection report published in July 2022, HMICFRS found the service had improved in almost all areas since the round one inspection.

NFRS has made a clear commitment to continuing to improve the use of data jointly funding this research.

Several themes are emerging from the first level of analysis, largely based on research in Prevention:

• A strong, shared purpose
• A genuine desire to help people
• A debate about quality versus quantity
• Supportive leadership
• IT systems help and hinder
• Concerns over the accuracy of data
• Too much data
• Unknown and hard to reach individuals and groups
• Questions about ‘Best Practice’

The next phase of the research will focus on Protection, the move to joint Head Quarters
with the Police and the Fire Cover Review, with the final results of all four service areas
expected to be reported to SLT in December 2023.
