Abstract: | The Fifty Years of Middle Street Film Documentary was commissioned as part of a National Lottery Heritage-funded project led by Dr Verusca Calabria. The project has explored and documented the hidden history of a mental health day centre in Beeston, Nottingham. For over half a century, Middle Street Resource Centre has been supporting the well-being of local people with enduring mental ill health who are socially excluded from mainstream society. The project has engaged with the centre users, staff, volunteers, and young people via inclusive participatory methods, such as arts and crafts, oral histories, reminiscence, illustration and poetry to resurface the history of the centre, including the campaign to resist its closure, which was won. The project culminated with the coproduction of four audio-visual exhibitions and a film documentary. This film documentary aims to highlight the paramount importance of accessing a day centre for people with long-term serious mental ill health at a time of little investment in long-term therapeutic community-type services and support structures in the mental health system. It further aims to shed light on a new wave of “psychiatric resistance” that has been emerging in recent times, in which service user groups and their allies now fight to keep services open and demand access to them. The film helps to remember those who are often ignored, forgotten, or misrepresented in the history of mental healthcare, which in turn gives a different and radical meaning to the past and present understandings of the mental illness experience. |
