Abstract

Beginning university symbolises a major milestone in students’ lives. This transition can come with challenges not previously experienced by the student and which may not be anticipated. University’s acknowledge this can have a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of students. One of the most popular methods implemented for helping students adjust to these challenges is the use of peer mentoring. This project explores how NTU’s peer mentoring programme is used within the School of Social Sciences. Online focus groups were conducted with students in their first-year and Student Mentors during academic year 2022/23. Thematic analysis was used to identify key themes. For first-years these were support from the student mentor, communication and contact, and social activities. For Mentors these were Challenges in running activities, lack of engagement from mentees, and the need for better marketing and communication channels.
