Abstract

In this perspective paper, I discuss the troubling inequalities driving our climate crisis, where wealthier nations profit most while poorer communities face the harshest consequences. My observations of the media coverage surrounding the 2024 Climate Conference in Baku reinforced my sense that even well-intentioned initiatives such as the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement often become entangled in politics and corporate interests. Drawing on multiple insights from environmental sociology – including Beck’s (World) Risk Society, Moore’s concept of the Capitalocene, and Fraser’s analysis of expropriation – I argue that minor reforms are not enough; we need fundamental changes to the economic structures fuelling these inequalities. I advocate for reparative justice, a shift away from relentless economic growth, and genuine global solidarity. In my view, climate justice is not optional – it is essential. It requires urgent, transformative action to safeguard people, ecosystems, and our planet’s future.
