Abstract

Across nations, undergraduate psychology programs aim to promote the acquisition of foundational psychology competences. Yet, a guiding international competence model for these programs is lacking. This paper describes the processes used by an international group of researchers, the International Collaboration on Undergraduate Psychology Outcomes (ICUPO) Committee, to develop the current version of the International Competences for Undergraduate Psychology (ICUP). The aims of national undergraduate psychology programs range from providing students with a psychology-focused education to prepare them to contribute in diverse work and community settings, to providing training in both foundational and professional psychology competences to produce licensed/registered professional psychologists. The value of undergraduate psychology, however, particularly for those who do not become professional psychologists, is being debated. ICUPO was established to collaboratively create a foundational psychology competence model that can be used to inform national curricula for all undergraduate psychology students, and to articulate the valuable competences that these students obtain. First, we give some background for the ICUPO project. Second, we discuss, within the context of psychological theory, the collaborative methodology involved in achieving the current version of ICUP. Third, we discuss the outcomes and also provide recommendations for educational leaders who are planning to pursue a similar goal.
