Abstract

Responding to literature calls to locate Human Resource Management (HRM) studies more contextually into public policy and regulation, we examine British green job creation under a new Labour government, and critique it using discourse analysis and political theory. Findings from official and unofficial British government texts and speeches reveal new UK-based green job creation appearing as contested terrain due to: concerns around green policy choices; differences between espoused versus enacted green jobs; policy implementation issues; the marginalization of HR, union and employee voices; and debates about state versus private equity funding. We contribute to the conference theme by illustrating such original UK contextual data as a valuable knowledge source to identify new stakeholders and approaches to help grow global economies through collaborative sustainability programmes. Implications arising for non-UK countries are detailed, alongside future research ideas, study limitations and conclusions.
