Abstract

The International Workshop 'When Social Science meets Lean and Digital Technologies’ is a pivotal platform for fostering dialog and collaboration across disciplines. This event brings together the field of Lean Construction, Digitalisation, and the Social Sciences, promoting discussions and deepening the understanding of their interconnections. Over the years, the workshop has consistently explored the adoption and integration of Lean principles and digital technologies in design and construction, with an emphasis on the crucial role that social dynamics play in these transformations.

At the heart of this workshop is the recognition that the interplay between Lean and digital technologies cannot be fully understood without considering the social context in which they operate. Human factors, team dynamics, organisational culture, and stakeholder engagement are essential to the success of these innovations. The workshop, therefore, highlights the importance of considering social dimensions alongside technological and process-driven advancements.

This workshop is designed as an open forum where researchers can come together to exchange ongoing research ideas, discuss current challenges, and shape the future of research. Participants are encouraged to engage in thought-provoking discussions, sparking the fertilisation of ideas across disciplines.

The short papers:
•Reflect on existing research at the intersection of Lean, Social Sciences and Digital Technologies
•Investigate the synergies and tensions between Lean principles, digitalisation, and social factors and
•Offer fresh insights into research needs, trends, and future directions

The Workshop is jointly organised by School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment, of the Nottingham Trent University, UK; The College of Built Environment, of the Birmingham City University, UK; The Ecole de Technologie Superieure, of the University of Quebec, Canada; and the Building Innovation Research Unit (NORIE) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil.

Six short papers are part of this publication. All short papers were reviewed by the organising committee, and the workshop includes two keynote speakers from different parts of the globe, highlighting the international character of the event. We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to all members of the organising committee, the distinguished keynote speakers, as well as the esteemed authors/presenters, for sharing their insights and ideas, as well as for their help and invaluable contributions to the workshop.
