Abstract

This research project investigated the strategic use of memes as instruments of activism, civic resistance, resilience, and information warfare during the Russia-Ukraine war. The project focused on understanding the evolving role of memetic warfare and its impact on digital and offline civic engagement. The research is backed by an extensive review of extant literature, and drawing on an online survey of 255 NAFO activists, 18 follow-up interviews, and further interviews with 21 Ukrainian citizens. The central aim was to understand how grassroots actors, particularly the North Atlantic Fella Organisation (NAFO), use digital content to counter information disorder, mobilise international support, and shape public narratives.
