Abstract

Loneliness is a profound and pervasive issue that affects millions of people across the world. It is not merely a fleeting feeling of solitude but a chronic state that can have severe implications for an individual’s mental, emotional, and physical health. The significance of loneliness as a social issue has been increasingly recognized in the UK in part due to the ageing profile of its population, for whom loneliness is a major challenge, along with the recognition of the heath and economic costs of loneliness. This has prompted a series of policy initiatives aimed at addressing its root causes and mitigating its effects. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of the UK’s efforts to tackle loneliness, examining the historical context, key policy developments, evidence base, organizational structures, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on loneliness.
