Abstract

Field classes are a key component of geographical, earth, ecological, and environmental science degree programmes, and they are commonly accepted as a learning activity that encourages deeper understanding of theoretical concepts and promotes active learning (France and Haigh, 2018). While developing cognitive and practical skills is essential, addressing affective aspects – such as student emotions and engagement – is equally crucial for a successful learning experience (Boyle et al., 2007). Effective field classes require careful organisation and clear academic articulation, necessitating thoughtful supervision and teaching strategies. This chapter explores the critical considerations for delivering effective field classes, emphasising the importance of addressing both cognitive and affective dimensions to enhance the overall learning experience.
