Abstract
Domestic kitchens in Iran underwent a paradigm shift from functional spaces to communal ones. This raised controversy between proponents of new residential design trends and conservative designers regarding its role in the spatial configuration house and its visual exposure, which was considered a feminine territory. Setting side by side, it is forgotten that both traditional and contemporary kitchens are isolated and isolating spaces. This study attempts to form a basis for future debate by evaluating the isolation level and the transition of domestic kitchens in 19 case studies in Tehran. In conclusion, the kitchen in all the case studies, which were spatially isolated, has become more visually open to adjacent spaces over time. This reflects the preference of the participants to not consider the kitchen a private space and how they desired more visually open kitchens, suggesting a trend towards greater integration with indoor and outdoor areas.
