Managing trauma in the workplace: strategies for wellbeing and organisational resilience.
Nottingham: Nottingham Trent University.
Abstract
This white paper outlines how trauma affects employee wellbeing, performance, and organisational resilience, emphasising that trauma is widespread and often hidden due to stigma and fear of disclosure. Despite its significant impact on cognition, behaviour, and workplace relationships, organisational responses remain inconsistent and largely based on personal judgement rather than evidence‑informed practice. The white paper highlights key challenges for survivors—including stereotypes, limited managerial capability, and psychologically unsafe environments and argues for a whole‑organisation, trauma‑informed approach. Core recommendations include clearer disclosure pathways, stronger line‑management training, integrated support systems, and environments that prioritise trust and psychological safety. As work becomes more complex and volatile, trauma‑informed practice is positioned as essential for inclusion, retention, and sustainable organisational performance.
