Abstract

NTU has been working with Makerere University (MU) as part of a 10-year global health partnership to promote primary healthcare in the poorest communities in Wakiso district, Uganda. The focus of our work is on strengthening the health workforce through working with community health workers (CHWs) who are the first point of access for primary health care services in the poorest of communities. We have trained over 600 CHWs in general health promotion and education, and real world health issues including malaria, diarrhoea, pneumonia, non-communicable diseases and anti-microbial resistance. This dialogue will explore the challenges of this work, from the perspectives of both the NTU-MU partnership supporting the health system, as well as the CHWs involved in health service delivery in the community.
