Abstract: | The PPE Refashioned exhibition showcased the work of over 30 creative practitioners - including researchers, fashion and textile students, academics and fashion designers – who explored sustainable approaches to designing and repurposing PPE isolation gowns. Divided into three, the first section disseminated outcomes of the AHRC-funded Redesigning PPE enquiry (AH/ VO15842/1), led by Professor Katherine Townsend at the Nottingham School of Art and Design (2021-2023). Section 1 documented the development of a ‘reusable PPE gown’ by Townsend’s research team, Eloise Salter and Karen Harrigan (NTU) and Dr Sonja Sterman (University of Maribor) in collaboration with local industry and NHS partners. Prototypes and supporting information illustrated how the Anze.NTU.RevolutionZERO gown was designed within a circular system involving a take-back scheme and three levels of repurposing to avoid sending the garments to landfill following their first 75 uses. Section 2 of the exhibition focused on selected outcomes from a series of ‘repurposing workshops’ held by Townsend and Slater between March and May 2023 to devise creative tactics for upcycling the used gowns with students and staff from the Fashion, Textile and Knitwear department. Artefacts included experimental printed, woven, knitted and embroidered swatches and components, alongside full and half-scale garments constructed from the PPE (polyester/ carbon graft) waste stream. Prizes for the Best Mood Board, Textile and Garment were awarded to three students whose work was shown alongside a show reel of all the students’ work from the workshops. Section 3 highlighted the work of four independent fashion companies, One BC, G Force, Klements (all NTU alumni) and Cunnington & Sanderson, who were invited to interpret the used gowns for the exhibition. Their conceptual garments (and accompanying photos and films) featured deconstruction/ reconstruction techniques such as spiral pattern cutting, jacquard knitting, sublimation printing and zero-waste approaches, demonstrating the potential for refashioning discarded textile materials. |
