Abstract

Education-focused careers are complex and diverse, and academics who pursue education-focused careers often face challenges in navigating their career journeys. For marginalised academics, this is even more true, and less well understood. In this talk, we will describe a qualitative study in which we interviewed education-focused academics with marginalised identities about their career development, and outline the results of a reflexive thematic analysis of the findings. Our themes highlight strengths and opportunities for education-focused academics, as well as barriers to progression. We will explore critically the implications of our findings, both psychological and systemic, and encourage discussions around issues of identity, equity, and higher education cultures and systems.
